The Township Committee of the Township of Bernards strives to save tax dollars, assure clean air and water, and improve working and living environments to build a community that is sustainable economically, environmentally and socially; a community which would thrive well into the new century.
The Township Committee of the Township of Bernards wishes to build a model of government which benefits our residents now and far into the future with green community initiatives which are easy to replicate and affordable to implement.
In an attempt to focus attention on “Green” issues, the Township Committee has established a Green Team Advisory Committee (GTA). The Bernards Township Green Team Advisory Committee will advise the township committee on ways to improve municipal operations with “Green” initiatives which are economically and environmentally sound through research and evaluation.

Efficient light bulbs offered in Bernards

...“The group, Community Green, is offering a free compact fluorescent light (CFL) bulb to the first 200 people who sign a pledge to replace five other incandescent bulbs in their home or workplace.
...“It’s to raise awareness,” said Ariane Delafosse, a landscape designer who founded Community Green earlier this year. “We’re just hoping people will come out and do this.”
Delafosse is also a member of the Township Committee-appointed “Green Team Advisory Committee,” which was created last May to study how to make the municipal government more environmental friendly. Community Green has partnered with the N.J. Clean Power Program in a bid to save energy and provide “simple climate change solutions for New Jersey.”
Part of that involves the promotion of the spiral CFL bulbs, which use less than a third of the electricity of incandescent bulbs. According to a recent edition of Popular Mechanics, CFL bulbs debuted in the early 1990s but failed to catch on because they were large and cost up to $25. Today, however, they are smaller, have more varied sizes, and generally cost about $5 or less.
...Delafosse said if every New Jersey household were to replace five traditional bulbs with CFL bulbs, 3.5 million tons of greenhouse gas emissions would be eliminated over the life of the bulbs – the equivalent to removing nearly 600,000 cars.
“Everyone wants to help but no one knows where to start,” she said. “This light bulb program is something that’s easy and gets them on the path to sustainable living.”
